A Tall Building with a Rich History
For many years, the Mizpah Hotel was one of the tallest buildings in Nevada. It shared this title with the nearby Belvada Building. Both buildings stood five stories high. The hotel was named after the famous Mizpah Mine and quickly became a very important place in Tonopah. It was the main spot for social gatherings and events.
Before the hotel was built, the Mizpah Saloon opened in 1907. This saloon was the very first permanent building in Tonopah. The hotel itself was built in 1905. It was funded by several important people, including George Wingfield, George S. Nixon, Cal Brougher, and Bob Govan. The hotel was designed by George E. Holesworth, though some records also mention Morrill J. Curtis as an architect.
Building Features
The Mizpah Hotel was built using strong materials. It had a special type of concrete called reinforced concrete. The front of the hotel was covered with stone, while the sides and back were made of brick. The hotel is connected to the three-story Brougher-Govan Block, which used to be the first Mizpah building.
Inside, the hotel had some modern features for its time. It had Cast iron columns in its windows and fire escapes. A wooden stairway with a skylight connects the different parts of the building. The Mizpah Hotel also had steam heating and the very first elevator in Tonopah!
Fun Legends and True Stories
Many interesting stories and legends are told about the Mizpah Hotel. Some people say that famous figures like Wyatt Earp once ran the hotel's saloon. Others claim that boxing legend Jack Dempsey worked there as a bouncer. There's even a story that billionaire Howard Hughes married Jean Peters at the Mizpah.
However, these stories are mostly legends! Wyatt Earp had already left Tonopah before the hotel was even built. While Howard Hughes did get married in Tonopah, it wasn't at the Mizpah Hotel. And Jack Dempsey himself said he was never a bouncer there. Even so, the hotel still has a "Jack Dempsey Room" and a "Wyatt Earp Bar" to honor these fun tales.
A New Chapter for the Mizpah
The Mizpah Hotel closed its doors in 1999. But in 2011, a new chapter began! Fred and Nancy Cline, who own Cline Cellars in California, bought the hotel. They worked hard to renovate and restore the building. The hotel reopened to the public in August 2011.
Today, the Mizpah Hotel has 47 rooms for guests. It also has a bar and two restaurants: The Pittman Cafe and the Jack Dempsey Room. There are plans to fix up even more rooms in an attached building and to add a small casino. The Mizpah Hotel continues to be a special place in Tonopah, welcoming visitors with its history and charm.
