Mohamed Abarhoun (Arabic: محمد أبرهون, romanized: Muḥammad ‘Ābarhūn; born 3 May 1989 – died 2 December 2020) was a professional football player from Morocco. He played as a defender.

Mohamed played for several clubs during his career. These included his hometown club Moghreb Tétouan in Morocco. He also played for Moreirense in Portugal and Çaykur Rizespor in Turkey. Mohamed also represented his country, Morocco, in different age groups and for the senior national team. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 31 due to stomach cancer.

Mohamed Abarhoun's Club Career

Playing for Moghreb Tétouan

Mohamed Abarhoun was born in Tétouan, Morocco. He played as a central defender for his local club, Moghreb Tétouan. He was with the team from 2010 to 2017.

He was considered part of the club's "golden generation." This team won the Botola Pro 1 league in 2012 and again in 2014. They also took part in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup. Mohamed played in 164 league games for the club. He scored 7 goals during his time there.

Moving to Moreirense in Portugal

In June 2017, Abarhoun moved to Portugal. He joined Primeira Liga club Moreirense. He had decided not to sign a new contract with Tétouan.

Mohamed was one of the first players brought in by the new manager, Manuel Machado. He scored his only goal for Moreirense on 10 September. This goal helped his team win 2–0 against Estoril Praia. It was their first win of the season.

In his first season, Mohamed played in 23 league games and 5 cup games. The club finished near the bottom of the league. In the 2018–19 season, he was a regular starter under the new manager, Ivo Vieira. He played in 14 league games and 1 cup game.

Joining Çaykur Rizespor in Turkey

In January 2019, Mohamed Abarhoun moved to Turkey. He signed an 18-month contract with Çaykur Rizespor. The club paid about €200,000 for him.

The manager, Okan Buruk, wanted Mohamed to make the team's defense stronger. Rizespor was trying to avoid being moved down from the Süper Lig. Mohamed played in 16 league games for Rizespor that season. The club finished in 11th place.

In the 2019–20 season, Mohamed played in 20 league games for Rizespor. His last match was on 24 February 2020. It was a 2–1 loss at home to İstanbul Başakşehir. He also played in one cup game. This was a 2–1 loss away to Galatasaray in the Turkish Cup.

Mohamed Abarhoun's International Career

Mohamed Abarhoun also played for his country, Morocco. He played nine games for the Morocco under-20 team. He also played eight games for the under-23 team.

This included three appearances at the 2012 Summer Olympics. At the Olympics, his team had two draws and one loss. They finished third in their group. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2013. He played in seven international games for the senior team.

His Illness and Passing

In February 2020, Mohamed Abarhoun felt unwell before a league match. He was taken to a hospital in Istanbul. Doctors diagnosed him with stomach cancer.

In June 2020, a spokesperson for Rizespor said that Mohamed was very ill. They expected he would not be able to play football again. Rizespor released him from his contract at the end of the season. However, the club continued to support him financially for his medical care.

In October 2020, Mohamed announced that he was recovering. He felt better and hoped to return to football. Sadly, he passed away from the illness on 2 December 2020. He was 31 years old.
