Major Mohit Sharma was a brave officer in the Indian Army. He was part of the special 1st Para SF unit.

Major Sharma received the Ashoka Chakra. This is India's highest award for bravery during peacetime. He was given this award after he passed away.

On March 21, 2009, Major Sharma fought against terrorists in a forest in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. He bravely saved two of his teammates. He also stopped four terrorists during this fight. Sadly, he was badly injured and passed away.

Before this, Major Sharma had already received two awards for his courage. He got a special card for his work against terrorism. Later, he received the Sena Medal for being brave in a secret mission in 2005.

In 2019, a metro station in Delhi was named after him. It is now called the Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar metro station.

Early Life and School

Mohit Sharma was born on January 13, 1978. His family lived in Rohtak, Haryana. His family called him "Chintu." His friends at the National Defence Academy called him "Mike."

He finished school in 1995. Then, he decided to join the National Defence Academy (NDA). This was his dream.

Army Career

Mohit Sharma joined the NDA in 1995. He was very good at sports like swimming, boxing, and horse riding. He even became a champion in horse riding. He also won in boxing.

In 1998, he joined the Indian Military Academy (IMA). He met the President of India, K. R. Narayanan, there. In December 1999, he became an officer called a lieutenant.

His first job was in Hyderabad. After three years, he chose to join the Para (Special Forces). He became a trained Para Commando in 2003. He was then promoted to captain.

He also worked with the 38 Rashtriya Rifles in Kashmir. There, he showed great leadership. In December 2005, he became a major. He received the Sena Medal for his bravery. Later, he trained other commandos for two years. Major Sharma returned to Kashmir, where he bravely gave his life in 2009.

On January 26, 2010, Major Mohit Sharma was given the Ashoka Chakra. This is India's highest award for bravery in peacetime. He received it for his ultimate sacrifice during the Kupwara operation.
