The Malakoff Theory
One idea connects the dessert to a historical event. This was the Crimean War, which happened between 1853 and 1856. During this war, there was a very strong fort called Malakoff. This fort protected a city named Sevastopol. A French general named Pélissier successfully captured this fort. Because of his victory, he was given the special title of Duke of Malakoff. Some people believe this dessert was first called "Malakoff pudding." It might have been created during that wartime period.
The Molotov Theory
Another idea links the dessert's name to a famous person. This person was Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Skriabin. He was an important politician in the Soviet Union. During the 1939-1945 war, he served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was widely known by his nickname, Molotov. It is thought that because of his international fame, the Portuguese people started calling this dessert "Pudim Molotov." This might have happened due to a simple mix-up or confusion with the similar-sounding Malakoff name.
