Mompach (which is Mompech in Luxembourgish) is a lovely village located in eastern Luxembourg. It is now part of a larger area called the commune of Rosport-Mompach.
This village is also found within the Echternach canton. A canton is like a region or district in Luxembourg. Echternach canton is part of the Grevenmacher district, which is another way Luxembourg organizes its areas.
Mompach's History as a Commune
For many years, Mompach was its own independent commune. A commune is a local government area, similar to a town or a small county. It had its own local leaders and managed its own affairs.
However, things changed on January 1, 2018. On this date, the commune of Mompach joined together with another commune called Rosport. They merged to create a brand new, larger commune. This new area is now known as Rosport-Mompach.
Villages of the Former Mompach Commune
Before it merged with Rosport, the Mompach commune included several smaller villages and places. These were:
- Born
- Givenich
- Herborn
- Moersdorf
- Mompach (the main village)
- Boursdorf (a smaller place, sometimes called a lieu-dit)
- Lilien (another lieu-dit)
