Mon Schjelderup

Mon Schjelderup (born June 16, 1870 – died November 21, 1934) was a talented Norwegian composer and pianist. She was known for creating beautiful music, especially for piano and voice.

Her Life and Musical Journey

Mon Schjelderup was born Maria Gustava Schjelderup in a town called Fredrikshald, which is now known as Halden, in Østfold, Norway. Her family was very musical, and she started writing her own songs and pieces when she was just 14 years old.

Mon studied piano with a famous teacher named Agathe Backer Grøndahl. Later, she traveled to learn more about music. She studied piano and music theory at the Royal Music Institute of Berlin in Germany. She also studied composition, which is the art of creating music, at the Conservatory in Paris, France, with a well-known composer named Jules Massenet.

In 1894, Mon Schjelderup showed her skills to the public for the first time in Christiania (which is now Oslo). She performed as both a pianist and a composer. After her studies, she returned to Christiania. She worked as a composer and taught piano at the Music Conservatory.

Mon Schjelderup never married. She stopped working at the age of 34 due to health reasons. She passed away in 1934 in Asker, Akershus.
