The Monadnock Mills are a really old group of factory buildings in Claremont, New Hampshire. They sit right next to the Sugar River. These mills were once the biggest factories in the upper Connecticut River area. They are also some of the oldest. The Monadnock Mills were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, many of these old buildings are used for new things.
A Look Back: The Story of Monadnock Mills
The story of these mills began in 1831. That year, a company called the Sugar River Manufacturing Company was created. Their goal was to make cotton and woolen fabrics.
The oldest building still standing is Mill Number 1. It has four floors and was built in 1836. After that, houses for the workers were built nearby. In 1843, new owners took over the company. They made the factory even bigger.
Mill Number 2 was built in 1853 on the other side of the river. Another nearby factory, the Sunapee Mill, was bought in 1856. In 1846, the company changed its name to "Monadnock Mills." The mills kept working until 1963. Most of the buildings from that time are still there. However, they are now owned by different people.
Awards for Being Green!
The Monadnock Mills have won special awards for being good to the environment. In 2016, they received the Manufacturing Leadership "Sustainability Leadership Award." They also won the 2017 FSC Leadership Award. These awards show how the mills have worked to be more eco-friendly over the years.
