Where is Mones Quintela?
Mones Quintela is found about 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) south of another town called Bella Unión. It sits right by the Uruguay River and a small stream known as Arroyo Itacumbú. The town is also close to a place called Cainsa. You can reach Mones Quintela from Route 3 using a local road.
Why is it called Mones Quintela?
The town got its name from a person named Alfredo Mones Quintela. He was an agricultural engineer, which means he was an expert in farming and how to make crops grow better. In the 1950s, he was a leader in a group called the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative.
History of the Town
For many years, a sugar plant called CALPICA (Cooperativa Agropecuaria Limitada de Producción e Industrialización de la Caña de Azúcar) was very important to Mones Quintela. Most people in the town worked there. This plant helped the town grow and thrive.
Later, the sugar plant changed. It became a cooperative that helped farmers water their vegetable and fruit crops. Today, the industrial part of the plant is used as a storage place for rice.
In November 2010, Mones Quintela celebrated a special event. It hosted the very first sugarcane festival in Uruguay. This event also marked 25 years since Mones Quintela was officially recognized as a town.
How many people live there?
In 2011, the population of Mones Quintela was 531 people. The number of people living in the town has changed over the years. For example, in 1996, there were 616 residents, and in 2004, there were 601.
