Playing Career Highlights
Monica Maxwell played high school basketball at East Chicago Central High School. In 1995, during her senior year, she helped her team, the Lady Cardinals, achieve an amazing 22–1 record. She was even considered one of the top high school players in the country!
College Basketball Success
From 1995 to 1999, Monica played for the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters basketball team. She became one of the best three-point shooters in the school's history. She also helped her team reach the NCAA Final Four twice, which is a huge achievement in college basketball! In 1999, she graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a degree in computer information systems.
WNBA Journey
After college, Monica joined the WNBA, which is the top professional women's basketball league. She played her first season with the Washington Mystics. Then, she spent her last three seasons playing for the Indiana Fever.
In 2000, Monica was a star player for the Indiana Fever. She led the Eastern Conference by making 62 three-pointers. She also set a team record by scoring 29 points in a single game against the Los Angeles Sparks on June 22, 2000. During the off-season, Monica also played for the Springfield Spirit in the WNBL.
USA Basketball Experience
Monica Maxwell also represented her country! In 1997, she was part of the Jones Cup Team for USA Basketball. This team won a silver medal in Taipei. Many of their games were very close, including an overtime win against Japan. In the final game, the USA team narrowly lost to South Korea, earning the silver medal. Monica scored an average of 5.3 points per game during this competition.
Coaching After Playing
After her playing career, Monica became a basketball coach. She worked as an assistant coach at Pike High School in Indianapolis, Indiana from 2002 to 2005. Later, she became an assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Tulane University from 2005 to 2006.
