Monster Rancher 2 is a fun video game released in 1999 for the PlayStation console. It's the second game in the Monster Rancher series for North America and Japan. In Japan, it's called Monster Farm 2. For players in Europe, this was actually the very first Monster Rancher game they could play, so it was just called Monster Rancher there.

This game lets you raise, train, and battle cool monsters! In 2020, a new version of the game was released in Japan for Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices.

How to Play Monster Rancher 2

In Monster Rancher 2, you play as a monster trainer. You won't see your character on screen or hear them talk directly. Instead, your helpful assistant, Colt, and her toucan, Joy, will guide you. You make all your choices and actions by picking options from menus.

Training Your Monsters

Your monsters start with a few basic moves for battles. They can learn many more moves as they train. To use a move in battle, your monster needs "guts." Guts slowly come back during a fight. Each move works best at a certain distance from your opponent. If you're close enough, your monster can even knock the other monster back!

Tournaments and Ranks

Throughout the year, there are many tournaments you can enter. Winning these battles earns you money, special items, and fame! To move up in rank, your monster needs to win an IMa Official Cup. Four of these special cups happen every year. As your monster's rank gets higher, they can enter tougher tournaments.

Unlocking New Monsters

When you start the game, you can raise certain types of monsters. But there are many more secret monster types to discover! You can unlock new monsters in a few ways:

  • By completing certain story events.
  • By going on expeditions to new areas.
  • By sending your monster on special errantry missions.

Often, when you unlock a new monster type, you'll get a special item. You can use this item to combine two monsters and create a new, unique monster. After you've unlocked a monster type, you can then get monsters of that type from CDs.

The Story of Monster Rancher 2

The story in Monster Rancher 2 isn't like a straight path. Instead, story events happen when you meet certain goals. For example, you might need to win a battle or reach a specific monster rank.

Becoming a Trainer

The game's story begins when your character goes to sign up as a monster trainer. That's when Colt shows up to become your new official assistant!

The Big Four Challenge

The main goal of the game is to have your monster beat the "Big Four." These are the four highest-ranked battles in the game. When your monster wins all of them, you'll see a special video about the history of monsters. After beating the Big Four, your champion monster can even compete in a special match against other top monsters!

IMA vs. FIMBA Meet

Monster Rancher 2 takes place around the same time as the first Monster Rancher game. However, it's set on a different continent! Monster Rancher 2 is in the IMA area, while the first game was in the FIMBA area. Because of this, there's a special battle where you can fight against Holly, the assistant from the first game!

This special event is called the IMA vs. FIMBA meet. It happens every four years, just like the Summer Olympics. Your monster needs to be a certain rank to enter. The meet always takes place in the last week of August. But first, you must win an entry tournament in the last week of July to qualify!

Discovering All Monsters

Even if you beat the Major 4 tournaments and the Legend Cup, you won't have unlocked all the monsters in the game. There are different steps you need to take to find and unlock each main type of monster.
