Sir Montagu Harry Proctor-Beauchamp (born April 19, 1860, died October 26, 1939) was a British Christian missionary. He was also known as the 7th Baronet of Proctor-Beauchamp. A missionary is someone who travels to spread their religious beliefs.

Early Life and Education

Montagu Proctor-Beauchamp was born on April 19, 1860. He was the fourth son of Sir Thomas William Brograve Proctor-Beauchamp. His mother was Catherine Esther Waldegrave.

He went to school at Repton School. Later, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, which is part of Cambridge University.

Becoming a Missionary

In 1885, Montagu Proctor-Beauchamp made an important decision. He became one of the Cambridge Seven. This was a group of seven students from Cambridge University. They all decided to become Christian missionaries in China.

He worked with the China Inland Mission. This mission helped spread Christianity in China. He worked in western China, in a region called Sichuan. This was during the time of the late Qing dynasty.

Montagu Proctor-Beauchamp worked with two other missionaries, Arthur T. Polhill-Turner and William Cassels. Together, they helped set up a proper Church of England area in Sichuan. This area was called a diocese.

Time in China and War Service

Montagu Proctor-Beauchamp had to leave China in 1900. This was because of a conflict called the Boxer Rebellion. However, he returned to China in 1902 and stayed until 1911.

After returning to England, he became a priest. He served as the Vicar of Monkton Combe in Somerset from 1914 to 1918.

During World War I, he was a very important chaplain. He was the Principal Chaplain of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He served in places like Egypt and Greece. He was even mentioned for his bravery in 1916. In 1919, he was a senior chaplain in northern Russia. He was given the title Honorary Chaplain to the Forces in 1921.

Family and Later Life

Montagu Proctor-Beauchamp married Florence Barclay in 1892. They had several children together.

In 1915, he became the 7th Baronet of Proctor-Beauchamp. This happened after his older brother, Horace, died in World War I. A Baronet is a special title of honor in Britain.

Sir Montagu Proctor-Beauchamp passed away in Langzhong, China, in October 1939. He was 79 years old. He was buried in the cemetery of St John's Cathedral, Langzhong. His son, Ivor, took over his title. Lady Proctor-Beauchamp, his wife, died in 1955.
