History of Monteagudo
Monteagudo was first called Sauces. It was an important place during many conflicts. These conflicts were between the local settlers (people of European or mixed background), the Spanish Empire, and the country of Bolivia. They also fought against the Eastern Bolivian Guarani people, who were often called Chiriguanos.
In 1728, a Chiriguano army attacked Sauces. They burned the church and captured 80 Spanish people. On March 29, 1892, Apiaguaiki Tumpa was executed in Monteagudo. He was the last war leader of the Chiriguano people.
How to Get Around: Infrastructure
To the west, Monteagudo is connected to Sucre, the capital city. This connection is made by a highway called Ruta 6. Less than one-third of this road is paved. Because of this, bus trips of 326 kilometers (about 202 miles) can take eight hours in dry weather. In rainy weather, it is hard to predict how long the journey will take.
To the northeast, Monteagudo is connected to Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is the capital of the nearby Santa Cruz Department. The unpaved Ruta 6 goes east for 104 kilometers (about 64 miles) to Ipati. There, it connects with highway Ruta 9. This road leads north to Santa Cruz. It is another 255 kilometers (about 158 miles) of paved road.
Population Growth
The number of people living in Monteagudo has grown a lot over the last ten years. In 1992, a census counted 5,130 people. By 2001, the census showed 7,285 people. In 2008, estimates for the population were between 7,500 and 10,501 people.
