Montes Taurus is a mountain range on the Moon. These peaks are found in a high area to the east of the Mare Serenitatis. This is in the northeastern part of the Moon's near side.
The Montes Taurus stretch about 170 kilometers (105 miles) across. Some of the mountains in this range reach heights of 3.0 kilometers (about 1.8 miles).
Craters in the Mountains
Several craters are located within this mountain range. The Römer crater is at the southwestern edge of the Montes Taurus. The Newcomb crater can be found in the northeastern part. There are also many smaller craters scattered throughout the Montes Taurus.
How the Mountains Got Their Name
The Montes Taurus were named by a famous astronomer named Johannes Hevelius. He named them after the Taurus Mountains on Earth, which are located in southern Turkey. The name "Montes Taurus" comes from Latin.
