History of Montezuma
Montezuma was first started way back in 1879. Later, in 1912, the entire town moved to be closer to the Santa Fe Railroad. This was important for travel and trade. The city was named after Moctezuma II, who was a famous ruler of the Aztec empire.

The sports teams at South Gray High School are known as the Rebels. Before the schools joined together, the Montezuma High School teams were called the Indians. In 1955, the Montezuma Indians boys' basketball team won the state championship!
