Montgomery City was a small, historic community in Mono County, California. It was not an official town with its own government, which is why it's called an unincorporated community. This place was located about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) east-northeast of Benton. It sat high up in the mountains, at an elevation of 6,450 feet (1,966 meters) above sea level.

The Story of Montgomery City

Montgomery City had a short but exciting history. It was a place that grew very quickly because of a special discovery.

A Silver Rush Town

The story of Montgomery City began in 1863. That year, people found silver in the mountains nearby. Silver is a valuable metal, and finding it often caused a "rush" of people hoping to get rich.

In 1864, a company called the Montgomery Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company was formed. This company helped organize the mining efforts. Soon, many people arrived, hoping to find their fortune.

Life in a Mining Camp

Because of the silver rush, Montgomery City appeared almost overnight. It quickly became a busy place. The community had about 50 tents and small cabins where people lived.

It also had several important businesses. There were four or five saloons, which were places for people to gather. A blacksmith's shop was essential for fixing tools and equipment. There was also a recorder's office, where mining claims were officially written down. A store or two provided supplies for the miners and residents.

The Town's Decline

Even though it grew fast, Montgomery City did not last long. Like many mining towns, its success depended on the silver. When the silver became harder to find, or the mines stopped producing as much, people started to leave. By the 1970s, Montgomery City was mostly just scattered ruins. Today, it serves as a reminder of California's exciting mining past.
