Montolieu Fox Oliphant Murray (born April 27, 1840, died February 20, 1927) was an important British nobleman. He was known as the 1st Viscount Elibank. He was the oldest son of Alexander Oliphant-Murray, the 9th Lord Elibank. Montolieu was taught at home. In 1854, he joined the Royal Navy, which is the UK's sea military force. He served in a war called the Second Opium War in 1860. He was on a ship named HMS Cambrian. Later, in 1865, he served on HMS Wolverine during the Jamaica Rebellion. He left the Navy in 1870 as a Commander.
Life and Public Service
In 1871, Montolieu took over his father's title, becoming the 10th Lord Elibank. This meant he inherited a special position in society. He also held an important role called Lord Lieutenant of Peeblesshire. He served in this role from 1896 to 1908. A Lord Lieutenant is the King's or Queen's personal representative in a county. In 1911, he was given an even higher title. He became the 1st Viscount Elibank. This made him a Viscount, which is a rank of nobility.
Family Life
In 1868, Montolieu Fox Oliphant Murray married Blanche Alice Scott. Her father was Dr. Edward John Scott. Montolieu and Blanche had four sons and five daughters. Their oldest son was named Alexander William Charles Oliphant Murray. He was born in 1870. Alexander was given his own special title, Baron Murray of Elibank, in 1912. Sadly, Alexander passed away before his father and did not have any children. Because Alexander passed away, the Viscount title went to Montolieu's younger son, Gideon Oliphant-Murray. Gideon became the 2nd Viscount Elibank after his father. Another son, Arthur Cecil Murray, later became the 3rd Viscount Elibank.
