Patrick Murray, 5th Lord Elibank
Patrick Murray, 5th Lord Elibank, was a well-known writer and economist.

The Lordship of Elibank is a special title in Scotland. It means someone holds a high rank in the Scottish nobility. This title was first created in 1643 for a person named Sir Patrick Murray. He was also given the title of Baronet in 1628. A Baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down through the family.

Over the years, different members of the Murray family held the title of Lord Elibank. The fifth Lord Elibank was known for being a writer and an economist. An economist studies how money and goods are made and used. His younger brother, the sixth Lord, became an admiral in the Royal Navy, which means he was a high-ranking officer in the British navy.

The Elibank Family's Political Roles

The seventh Lord Elibank was important in politics. He was a Member of Parliament for Peeblesshire, which means he represented that area in the British government. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Peeblesshire, a special representative of the King or Queen in that area.

His great-grandson, the tenth Lord, also served as Lord Lieutenant of Peeblesshire. In 1911, he received an even higher title: Viscount Elibank. This new title was part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which is another system of noble titles.

Viscount Elibank: A New Title

The tenth Lord's oldest son, Alexander Murray, was a politician from the Liberal Party. He was given the title of Baron Murray of Elibank in 1912. However, he passed away before his father. So, when the tenth Lord died, his younger son became the second Viscount Elibank.

The second Viscount also served in Parliament, representing Glasgow St Rollox. He was also a Lord Lieutenant of Peeblesshire. After he died, his younger brother became the third Viscount. He too represented Kincardineshire in Parliament as a Liberal.

The Viscountcy Ends

When the third Viscount died in 1962, the title of Viscount Elibank ended because he had no direct heirs to pass it on to. However, the older titles of Baronet and Lord Elibank continued. They passed to his third cousin, who became the thirteenth Lord Elibank.

The current holder of the title, as of 2017, is the fifteenth Lord Elibank, Robert Francis Alan Erskine-Murray. He inherited the title from his father in 2017.

The Elibank Plot

The Honourable Alexander Murray of Elibank, who was the fourth son of the fourth Lord Elibank, was involved in a secret plan in 1752. This plan was called the Elibank Plot. It was part of the Jacobite movement, which aimed to bring the Stuart family back to the British throne.

After the plot, Alexander Murray moved to France. There, he was known as "Count Murray" and represented the Jacobite claimant, James Francis Edward Stuart, who was also called the "Old Pretender." The Old Pretender even gave Alexander Murray the title of Earl of Westminster in 1759.

Family Home

The main home of the Elibank family is called The Coach House. It is located near Sunningdale in Berkshire, England.
