The Monument du 22 Novembre 1970 is a special monument in Conakry, Guinea. It celebrates a big event that happened in 1970. This event was when Guinea successfully defended itself against an attack by Portuguese troops. This attack was called Operation Green Sea.

What Happened on November 21, 1970?

On November 21, 1970, a group of soldiers from Portugal tried to invade Conakry. They came from the sea. Some Guinean fighters helped them. Their goal was to remove the government led by President Sékou Touré.

The invaders took control of a place called Camp Boiro. They also freed some people who were held there. The person in charge of the camp, Siaka Touré, managed to hide. General Lansana Diané, who was the Minister of Defense, was captured. But he later escaped and found safety with the ambassador from Algeria.

Why Was the Monument Built?

The invasion attempt did not succeed. After it failed, the government decided to build a monument. Construction started before November 22, 1971. The monument was built to remember the people who were affected by this event.

President Sékou Touré placed the first stone for the monument. Many important Guinean officials were there. Guinean and Chinese workers also attended the ceremony. A Chinese official, Tsao Kouan-lin, gave a speech. He talked about the strong friendship between the people of Guinea and China.
