About the Sailor Monument
This monument is a statue of a sailor who looks like a helmsman. A helmsman is someone who steers a ship. The sailor stands proudly behind a ship's wheel, ready to guide a vessel.
The statue is made from copper plates. It stands on a strong concrete base. This base is covered with smooth gray granite plates. The sailor statue itself is about 385 centimeters (12.6 feet) tall. The entire monument, including its base, reaches a height of 495 centimeters (16.3 feet).
Christmas Fun
Every year since 2017, something special happens to the monument. On December 1st, the sailor statue gets dressed up as Santa Claus! It wears a big red coat, trousers, a hat, and a long white beard.
This fun event is organized by Polsteam. It helps promote the local Christmas market in Szczecin. The market takes place on Kwiatowa Avenue and at Żołnierza Polskiego and Lotników Squares.
It takes about 1.5 hours to dress the statue in its Santa outfit. A team of three people made the costume. One of them was Ewelina Szubartowska. They used around 25 meters of fabric, three meters of sheepskin, and 10 meters of zipper to create the festive look.
