The Monument to Count Ansúrez is an important statue located in Valladolid, Spain. You can find it right in the city's main square, the Plaza Mayor. This monument features a bronze statue of Count Pedro Ansúrez. He was a very significant historical figure because he founded the city of Valladolid in the 11th century. The statue stands on a stone base that also has other interesting sculptures.

The Story Behind the Monument

People wanted to build a monument to Count Ansúrez for a long time. There were ideas in the 1800s, but they didn't happen. Finally, in the early 1900s, the project began.

Creating the Statue

The job of making the statue was given to a sculptor named Aurelio Carretero. He started working on it in January 1901. By April of the same year, he had finished casting the statue. He even donated the bronze material himself!

The statue of Count Ansúrez is about 2.60 meters (or about 8.5 feet) tall. The Count holds the banner of Castile in his right hand. In his left hand, he holds important documents that show he was the Lord of Valladolid. He also leans on the handle of a large sword.

The Pedestal and Its Details

The stone base, or pedestal, for the statue was designed by a city architect named Juan Agapito y Revilla [es]. This pedestal also has bronze decorations made by Carretero.

These decorations include:

  • An image that represents history.
  • A special message that says: "The city of Valladolid builds this monument to remember its protector and generous helper, Count D. Pedro Ansúrez. 11th-12th centuries."
  • The official symbols, or arms, of the city.
  • Two detailed pictures, called reliefs, that show important moments from Count Ansúrez's life.

The monument was officially shown to the public on December 31, 1903.

Moving the Monument Temporarily

Sometimes, big city squares need repairs or changes. Because of this, the monument was carefully moved and stored away twice. This happened in the 1970s and again in the 1990s, while the Plaza Mayor was being renovated.
