The Monument to José Martí is a cool piece of public art you can find in Madrid, Spain. It was a special gift from the country of Cuba to Madrid. This monument honors José Martí, a famous Cuban writer and activist. He is known for fighting for Cuba's freedom from Spain.

About the Monument

This monument was a thoughtful gift from the country of Cuba to the city of Madrid. It was designed by two talented people: José Villa, who was the sculptor, and Rómulo Fernández, who was the architect.

The monument stands very tall, reaching 7.90 meters (about 26 feet) high. It looks like a tall, rectangular block, which is also called a cuboid. This shape has a base that is 1.80 meters by 1.80 meters. The monument is quite heavy, weighing 15 tonnes, and it is made from strong steel and beautiful marble. You can also spot the star from the flag of Cuba on it as a decoration.

What You Can See on It

On the front side of the monument, there is a carving that shows the upper part of José Martí's body, called a bust.

On the right side, there's a message that says: "madrid a josé martí (1853-1895) héroe nacional de cuba". This means "Madrid to José Martí (1853–1895) National Hero of Cuba."

On the left side, another message reads: "y pongamos alrededor de la estrella en la bandera nueva esta fórmula del amor triunfante con todos y para el bien de todos". This translates to: "Let's put around the star in the new flag this formula of triumphant love with all and for the good of all."

When and Where It Was Unveiled

The monument was officially shown to the public in October 1986. Important people attended the ceremony, including Juan Barranco, who was the Mayor of Madrid at the time, and Armando Hart, Cuba's Minister of Culture.

You can find the monument in a place called Plaza de Quito. This area is a wider part of the Paseo de la Habana [es] street. It's an open space with two fountains, pine trees, cypress trees, and hybrid plane trees, making it a nice spot to visit.
