The Monumento al Jíbaro Puertorriqueño (which means "Monument to the Puerto Rican Countryman") is a special monument built in Puerto Rico. It was created to honor the Jíbaro, who is a traditional country person from Puerto Rico. This important statue is located on the highway between Cayey and Salinas, Puerto Rico. A famous artist named Tomás Batista sculpted it.
Where to Find the Jíbaro Monument
The Monumento al Jíbaro is located in a place called Barrio Lapa, which is part of the town of Salinas, Puerto Rico. Many people think it's in a different spot, but it's actually about 300 feet from Salinas's barrio Las Palmas.
This monument sits right on Puerto Rico Highway 52, which is a main road. You can find it at kilometer post "49.0". Right next to the monument is a rest area for people traveling north on PR-52. This is the only rest area like it on a highway in Puerto Rico!
The monument is located between two exits on PR-52: exit 39 (which leads to PR-1 and PR-15 towards Cayey, Aibonito, Cidra, and Jajome) and exit 58 (which goes to Albergue Olimpico). You can only get to the monument if you are driving in the southbound lanes of PR-52. There is no access from the northbound lanes or the northbound rest area.
The area where the monument stands is interesting because it's a "transition zone." This means it's where the central mountains, which are usually wet, meet the drier southern part of the island.
