MoonBase Commander is a fun strategy video game. It came out in 2002 from Humongous Entertainment. In this game, you control a main base, called a "hub." From your hub, you can launch new bases, attack enemies, and build defenses. You also collect energy to make your base bigger.
Every building you create is connected to its main hub by a special cord. These cords cannot cross over each other. The game lets you play by yourself or with friends. It even won an award called "Best of 2002: The Game No One Played" from IGN.
How to Play MoonBase Commander
This game is a turn-based game. This means you take turns with your opponents. Each turn, you get a limited amount of energy points. You use these points to attack enemies or build more structures for your base.
Most of your units are on the ground. They are connected by a cord to the unit that made them. These cords cannot overlap or land in water. All units, whether on the ground or not, must be launched from their starting unit. This is similar to how many artillery games work.
You control how powerful your shot is. The longer you hold down the launch button, the farther your unit will fly. Watch out for wind, as it can change where your units land! The game maps are special because they wrap around at the edges. This means you can never get stuck in a corner of the map.
Choose Your Faction
In MoonBase Commander, you can pick one of four groups to play as. These groups are NiceCo, DeWulf, System7, and Team Alpha. They all play the same way. The only differences are how they look.
Game Modes
There are different ways to play MoonBase Commander:
- Skirmish Mode: In this mode, you can battle against up to three computer players. You can pick how hard they are to beat. Your goal is to destroy all the other players' bases.
- Challenge Mode: This mode has sixteen special missions. There are four missions for each faction. Each challenge has different goals, enemies, and settings. When you finish a challenge, you earn a medal: Gold, Silver, or Bronze. Your medal depends on how fast you complete the mission. You unlock the next challenge after you finish the one before it. Once you complete all challenges, you see the game's credits.
Playing with Friends
The game has a way to play with others on a local network (LAN). Playing online over the internet used to need special software like GameSpy. However, fans created a tool called the Moonbase Commander Console. This tool made it easier for players to connect online. In 2013, the code for this tool was made public. Other tools like MoonbaseIP also help players connect. There's even a tool called MBCImport that lets you use custom maps.
