Moon Valley is a unique area found in Independence Township, Michigan, in the United States. It's located in the southern part of the township, in Oakland County, Michigan. This valley sits at the northern base of Waterford Hill.

How Moon Valley Was Created

Moon Valley was formed a very long time ago, around 14,000 years in the past. This happened when giant sheets of ice, known as continental glaciers, slowly moved away. As these glaciers retreated, they left behind piles of dirt and rocks called moraines. They also carved out valleys and created many lakes, including those near Moon Valley.

The History of Moon Valley

Stephen Moon's Farm

In 1854, a man named Stephen Moon (who lived from 1823 to 1909) moved to Independence Township, Michigan. He came all the way from Palmyra, New York. Stephen Moon was the first person to settle in this valley. His land was on the northern side of Waterford Hill, right along an old path called the Saginaw Trail. Today, that path is known as Dixie Highway.

Stephen Moon started a 120-acre farm there. He raised many different animals, including sheep, hogs, cows, and various kinds of fowl (like chickens or ducks).

Passing Down the Farm

Later, Stephen's son, Melvin C. Moon (1854-1933), took over the farm. Melvin continued to run the farm until 1910. Because of the Moon family living and working there for so long, the valley became known as "Moon Valley."

Moon Valley Today

Over time, the original farm land was divided into smaller pieces. Today, Moon Valley is home to houses along Maple Lane. There's also a business area along Dixie Highway, where the old Saginaw Trail used to be.

Exploring Moon Valley's Nature

The Clinton River flows around Moon Valley. It also winds its way through Greens Lake. Greens Lake is quite large, covering 117 acres, and it's 55 feet deep. This lake borders the western side of Moon Valley, adding to its natural beauty.
