Moonbi is a small village in New South Wales, Australia. It's about 20 kilometres north of the city of Tamworth. Moonbi is located at the bottom of the Moonbi Range. It's part of the Tamworth Regional Council area. In 2006, about 357 people lived in Moonbi.

This village is well-known for its poultry industry. Many large chicken farms are found here. You can even see a giant fibreglass chicken statue in Moonbi! This statue celebrates the area's important poultry business. The land around Moonbi also has many small properties. People often use these blocks to keep horses.

A Look at Moonbi's History

The land around Moonbi has a long history. It is the traditional home of the Kamilaroi (or Gamilaraay) and Anaiwon Aboriginal people.

In 1830, two explorers named William Dangar and Edward Cory crossed these ranges. You can still see a famous rock landmark called "Cory's Pillar." It's also known as Cory's Nightcap. This balancing stone is on the right side of the New England Highway when you drive north.

A village started to grow in Moonbi in the 1850s. This was when bullock teams and travellers began passing through. They were looking for new land for their livestock. Back then, Moonbi had two inns and one hotel for visitors. A post office opened in 1859. The Moonbi Public School welcomed its first students in 1882.

In 2007, Moonbi became a focus point during an equine influenza outbreak. Horses at the Moonbi Recreation Ground had to stay in one place for a while. This happened after horse riding events took place there. It was a challenging time for horse owners.

Today, the village has several useful places. These include a post office, a public school, and a recreation ground. There's also a pony club, a general store, and a nursing home. You can find a produce retailer, a roadhouse, and a service station. There's even a company that supplies rubber belting.

If you travel north on the New England Highway, you'll reach the Moonbi Lookout. It's on the first Moonbi Hill. This lookout sits on a huge granite rock. It offers amazing views of Moonbi and the Cockburn Valley.
