The Story Behind the Name

The lake has a fun story about how it got its name! Back in 1910, it was part of a route called the Moonshine Trail. The lake was first known as Mirage Lake.

Local stories say that in the 1920s, two men named Jack Campbell and Harry Hanrahan were climbing a steep bank near the lake. They accidentally spilled a special homemade drink they were carrying. From that day on, the lake became known as Moonshine Lake!

There's also a legend that a wealthy woman once buried gold coins at the bottom of the lake. People say that sometimes, a few gold coins still wash up on the shore.

Moonshine Lake Provincial Park

Moonshine Lake Provincial Park was created in 1979. It covers a large area of 847 hectares (about 2,093 acres). The park is a popular place for visitors to enjoy the outdoors.

The main camping area is located on the north and northeast sides of the lake. If you're just visiting for the day, there's a special day-use area on the south side. There are also spots for group camping, making it a great place for friends and families to gather.
