Moor Allerton is a lively area located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. You can find it in North Leeds, close to King Lane and the Leeds Outer Ring Road. It's a great place with a mix of homes and shops.

About Moor Allerton

Moor Allerton is mostly made up of houses built in the 1950s and 1960s, along with some newer homes. It's part of the Leeds City Council area, mainly within the Alwoodley and Moortown wards. These wards are part of the Leeds North East area for the UK Parliament.

The area has a modern shopping centre that was rebuilt in the 1990s. Here you can find a big Sainsbury's supermarket, a Homebase store, and many other shops. There's also a library and a public house called The Penny Fun. The library first opened on 5 March 1982 and quickly became very popular!

Moor Allerton is split by King Lane. To the west, you'll find the Black Moor Estate, which has its own local shops and services. To the east is the Lingfield Estate.

You can also find a row of shops with a post office, a Happy Shopper store, charity shops, and tasty Chinese and Indian takeaways. The Moortown Social Club is located on Cranmer Gardens.

The area is home to two lovely woodlands: Tynwald Woods (1.3 hectares) and Cranmer Bank Wood (2.34 hectares). Both are managed by the city council and are great places to explore nature.

What's in a Name?

The name Allerton first appeared a long time ago, between 1147 and 1182. It comes from an old English word, alor, which means 'alder tree', and tūn, meaning 'farmstead' or 'estate'. So, Allerton originally meant 'farmstead of the alder trees'.

Because Allerton was a common name in Yorkshire, the word 'moor' was added to help people tell it apart from other places like Chapel Allerton. The name Moor Allerton started being used in the early 1200s. Sometimes, it was even called 'Allerton super mora', which means 'Allerton on the moor' in Latin.

Moor Allerton Golf Club

After the First World War, many Jewish people lived in North Leeds. At that time, some clubs and groups would not let Jewish people join. This was true for the Moortown Golf Club and others nearby.

So, a group of people bought farmland to create a new golf club. Even though some local groups didn't want it, they got permission to build. The Moor Allerton Golf Club opened on 27 March 1923. At first, it only had 12 holes ready to play.

Even though some people called it a "Jewish Golf Course," it was always open to everyone, both members and visitors. The golf club made the area more popular, and many houses were built nearby where there used to be very few people.

In the late 1960s, the club bought new land on Blackmoor Farm. The old site on Nursery Lane was then sold for housing. The new golf club opened on its current spot near Coal Road, Wike, on 2 May 1971. The old clubhouse on Nursery Lane was turned into a pub called The Allerton.
