Moordrecht (Dutch: [ˈmoːrdrɛxt]) is a charming village in the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland, right along the Hollandse IJssel river.

What's in the Name Moordrecht?
The name "Moordrecht" has a special meaning. The first part, "Moor," means swamp or marsh. The second part, "drecht," means floodland or a similar type of watery area. This name tells us a lot about what the land was like a long time ago!
A Village's New Beginning: Joining Zuidplas
Villages and towns in the Netherlands sometimes decide to join together. This helps them work better as a team. In 2006, the people of Moordrecht had a vote about their future.
Most people (93%) wanted to join with two nearby towns. These were Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel and Zevenhuizen-Moerkapelle. Only a small number of people wanted to join Gouda.
Because of this vote, Moordrecht became part of a new, larger municipality. This new municipality is called Zuidplas. It was officially formed in 2010.
