Mora, Washington facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mora was once a small community located in Clallam County, in the state of Washington, in the United States. It was known as a "populated place" by the U.S. government, meaning it was a place where people lived. Today, the original settlement no longer exists.

What Was Mora?

Mora was a small community that existed for many years. It was located in a beautiful part of Washington state, near the coast. Like many small towns, it had a post office, which was an important place for people to send and receive mail.

How Mora Got Its Name

The story of Mora's name is quite interesting! When the post office first opened in 1891, it was actually called "Boston." However, there was already a very famous city called Boston, Massachusetts, on the other side of the country. To avoid confusion, the name was changed.

The new name, Mora, came from Mora, Sweden. This was the hometown of an early postmaster, who was the person in charge of the post office. The post office in Mora operated for many years, finally closing its doors in 1942.

Mora Today

By 1980, all signs of the original Mora settlement were gone. Nothing was left of the old buildings or homes. Today, the name "Mora" refers to a different area nearby. This area includes a campground and other facilities that are part of the famous Olympic National Park. These facilities are about half a mile away from where the old settlement used to be.
