Antônio Carlos Moreira Pires (born July 8, 1947 – died April 13, 2020), known as Moraes Moreira, was a famous Brazilian musician and songwriter. He was a very important artist who helped shape Brazilian music. During the 1970s, he played guitar and sang in a popular band called Novos Baianos. After that, he started a solo career and recorded many albums. Moraes Moreira was known for mixing many different music styles, like rock, samba, and a lively Brazilian rhythm called frevo.

His Music Journey

Joining Novos Baianos

Moraes Moreira started his music journey by playing the accordion at local festivals in Brazil. When he was young, he learned to play the classical guitar. Later, he moved to a city called Salvador, where he met other musicians. There, he discovered rock music, which was new and exciting.

He then met other talented artists like Baby Consuelo, Pepeu Gomes, Paulinho Boca de Cantor, and Luiz Galvão. Together, they formed the band Novos Baianos in 1969. The band was very active until 1975. Moraes Moreira and Pepeu Gomes wrote almost all of the band's songs. Their album Acabou Chorare, released in 1972, is considered one of the greatest Brazilian music albums ever.

Starting a Solo Career

In 1975, Moraes Moreira began his solo career. He recorded more than 20 albums on his own. He became famous for his songs related to the Brazilian Carnival, especially a style called "frevo trieletrizado." Some of his popular hits from this time include "Pombo Correio" and "Bloco do Prazer."

In the 1980s, he took a break from the Bahian Carnival because it became very commercial. Later, in 1994, he released an album called "Brasil Tem Concerto," which was inspired by classical music. The next year, he had a special show on MTV Brasil called Moraes Moreira Acústico MTV.

In 1997, he celebrated his 50th birthday and 50 carnivals with an album called 50 Carnavais. Two years later, he released 500 Sambas to honor 500 years since Brazil was discovered. This album focused on samba music.

In 2000, he released Bahião com H, which featured the baião music style with rhythms from Bahia. He also wrote a book called A história dos Novos Baianos e outros versos.
