Morning Call Coffee Stand is a famous place in the New Orleans area. It sells special New Orleans-style café au lait (coffee with milk) and delicious beignets (fried dough with powdered sugar). It is the second oldest coffee shop of its kind in the greater New Orleans area, right after Café du Monde.

The Story of Morning Call

Early Days and Rivalry

Morning Call was started by Joseph Jurisch in 1870. Its first location was in the French Market in New Orleans. This was eight years after its main competitor, Café du Monde, opened nearby in the French Quarter. For over 100 years, Morning Call was a well-known landmark in the French Quarter. People who lived in New Orleans often had strong opinions about whether they liked Morning Call or Café du Monde better. For many years, both coffee shops even offered "curb service." This meant you could get your coffee and beignets delivered right to your car!

Moving Locations

In 1974, Morning Call had to close its original spot. The rent was going up, and the French Market area was changing. So, the owners moved the coffee stand to a new area called Fat City in Metairie, Louisiana. Metairie is a town in Jefferson Parish, just outside New Orleans.

Morning Call returned to New Orleans in 2012. They opened a second location inside the City Park Casino Building in City Park.

Recent Changes

In April 2018, the Metairie location of Morning Call closed down. The owners explained that rising rent, higher costs, and many new coffee shops nearby made it hard to stay open. Bob Hennessey, who runs Morning Call, said they were not going out of business. He said they would focus on the New Orleans store.

Later in 2018, New Orleans City Park decided to find the best business for the Casino Building spot. They held a bidding process. Morning Call lost the lease to its old rival, Café du Monde. Morning Call closed its last fixed location in January 2019. The owners promised to find a new permanent home.

In 2019, Morning Call started doing "pop-ups" around the New Orleans area. These are temporary locations where they could still serve their famous coffee and beignets. They were also looking for a new permanent place. In May 2020, Morning Call found a new home near City Park. It opened its current location at 5115 Canal Blvd.
