Founded by Addison Silverwood

Mortimer is a small place in Ohio, United States, that doesn't have its own official local government like a city or village. It's called an unincorporated community. You can find Mortimer in the middle of Allen Township, which is part of Hancock County. It's located between the village of Van Buren to the north and the city of Findlay to the south.

History of Mortimer

Mortimer has an interesting past! It was first known by a different name: Silverwood.

How Mortimer Started

A person named Addison Silverwood created or "laid out" the community in 1883. He named it after himself, which is why it was called Silverwood at first.

The Post Office

Around the same time, in 1883, a post office opened in the community. This post office was called Mortimer, which is how the community got its current name. The post office served the people living there for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1911.
