Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Moscadello di Montalcino is a special kind of sweet white Italian wine. It comes from a beautiful old village in Tuscany, Italy, called Montalcino. This wine is known for its lovely golden color and sweet taste.

A Look Back in Time

The story of Moscadello grapes in Montalcino began a long time ago, during the Renaissance. This was a period in history when art, science, and culture were very important.

Famous people from history enjoyed this wine. For example, Sante Lancerio, who was a wine expert for Pope Paul III, loved Moscadello. He described it as sweet and pleasant, but not too sweet. Even the Italian poet Ugo Foscolo wrote about this delicious dessert wine in his letters.

Later, something almost destroyed the Moscadello grapevines in Tuscany. A tiny bug called Phylloxera attacked the plants. For a long time, there were almost no Moscadello grapes left. But by the end of the 1900s, new vines were planted. Many of these new grapes came from a type called moscato bianco from another part of Italy called Piedmont.

In 1984, Moscadello di Montalcino received a special quality label called Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC). This label helps show that the wine is made in a specific way and meets high standards. In 2014, winemakers produced about 275 hectoliters of this special wine. That's a lot of wine from about 54 acres (22 ha) of grapevines!

Perfect Pairings

Because Moscadello di Montalcino is sweet and pleasant, it's a great wine to enjoy with certain foods. It goes very well with fresh fruit, delicious desserts, or even ice cream.
