The Moses Andrews House is a very old house located at 424 West Main Street in Meriden, Connecticut. It was built around 1760, making it one of the few 18th-century homes still standing in the city. Since about 1940, a local history group has looked after it as a museum. This special house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 because of its historical importance.

What Is the Moses Andrews House?

The Moses Andrews House is a historic building that helps us understand life in the past. It's now a museum, meaning people can visit it to see how families lived hundreds of years ago. It's a great example of old American architecture.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Moses Andrews House is on the west side of downtown Meriden. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a central chimney and a roof that slopes down very far in the back, like a "saltbox" house. This style was common a long time ago.

The front of the house has five windows, with the main door in the middle. The doorway has fancy decorations from the 1800s. Inside, the house has a typical old layout with a central chimney. Many parts of the house are still original, like the floors and door handles.

Who Was Moses Andrews?

The house was built around 1760 by Samuel Andrews. Later, his son, Moses Andrews, inherited it. Moses was an important person in Meriden during the American Revolution. This was a time when the American colonies were fighting for independence from Great Britain.

Moses Andrews was a member of the Anglican faith, which was connected to the Church of England. Because of this, some people worried he might support the British king, making him a "Loyalist." Loyalists were people who stayed loyal to the British during the war. Because of these concerns, Moses was not allowed to attend church in a nearby town called Wallingford, Connecticut. Instead, he held Anglican church services right in his own home!

How Did It Become a Museum?

After Moses Andrews passed away, the house was sold outside the family. In 1926, the city of Meriden bought the property. They mainly wanted the land around the house to build a school.

Around 1940, a group of citizens decided to help take care of the old house. This group later joined with the local historical society. Together, they have preserved the Moses Andrews House so that people today can learn about its long history.
