Moses Haughton (born July 7, 1773 – died June 26, 1849) was a British artist. He was known for being an engraver, who made prints from drawings, and a painter. He often created very small, detailed pictures called miniature portraits.

Early Life and Training

Moses Haughton was born in Wednesbury, a town in England's Black Country. His uncle, also named Moses Haughton, was a painter. In 1790, young Moses moved to Liverpool.

While in Liverpool, he became friends with William Roscoe, a well-known writer and art collector. Moses Haughton might have even studied art with the famous painter George Stubbs. In 1795, he moved to London and joined the Royal Academy Schools. There, he was a classmate of J. M. W. Turner, who became a very famous landscape painter. By 1796, William Roscoe already saw Haughton as a promising young engraver.

Working with Henry Fuseli

From 1803, Moses Haughton became the main engraver for the artist Henry Fuseli. Haughton's prints helped many people see and learn about Fuseli's artwork. He also painted a famous miniature portrait of Fuseli and his wife, Sophia Rawlins.

Haughton and Fuseli became close friends. Moses Haughton even lived with Fuseli's family for a time. After Fuseli passed away, his wife, Mrs. Fuseli, lived with the Haughton family until she died too.

Showing His Art

Moses Haughton showed his art at the Royal Academy in London for many years, from 1808 to 1848. Other artists, like Robert William Sievier, made prints of some of Haughton's miniatures, such as "The Love Dream" and "The Captive."

Haughton painted portraits of many important people. Some of his famous subjects included Erasmus Darwin, a scientist and grandfather of Charles Darwin, and Sir Joshua Reynolds, another well-known painter.
