The Mostyn baronets are two important family lines from Wales. They both hold special titles called "baronetcies," which were created in the 1600s. A baronet is a title of honor that can be passed down through a family, like a knight but inherited. As of 2015, one of these Mostyn family lines still holds its baronetcy. Both families are related and believe they are descended from Edwin of Tegeingl, a powerful Welsh lord from the 11th century. His lands were roughly where modern Flintshire is today.

The Mostyn Baronetcy, linked to the town of Mostyn in Flintshire, Wales, was first created on August 3, 1660. The very first baronet was Sir Roger Mostyn.

Many members of this family line were important in politics. The second baronet, Sir Thomas Mostyn, was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Caernarfon. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the country's government, like a senator or representative today.

The third baronet, Sir Roger Mostyn, was also an MP for several areas, including Flintshire. He also served as the Lord-Lieutenant of Flintshire. A Lord-Lieutenant is the King or Queen's personal representative in a county.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth baronets also served as MPs for Flintshire. The fifth baronet was also a Lord-Lieutenant. This particular baronetcy ended in 1831 when the sixth baronet passed away without a male heir.

Interestingly, the sixth baronet's sister, Elizabeth, married Sir Edward Pryce Lloyd. He later received his own title, becoming the first Baron Mostyn.

The Mostyn Baronetcy of Talacre, also in Flintshire, was created a bit later, on April 28, 1670. This family line comes from Richard ap Hewell, who lived in Mostyn during the time of King Henry VIII. His great-grandson, Edward Mostyn, became the first baronet of Talacre.

One interesting connection from this family is to the Barons Vaux of Harrowden. Charles Mostyn, a descendant of the fifth baronet, married Mary Lucinda Butler. Their son, George Charles Mostyn, later became the sixth Baron Vaux of Harrowden. You can learn more about this part of the family by looking up Baron Vaux of Harrowden.

Other notable people from this family include:

  • The Most Reverend Francis Mostyn, who was a Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff. An archbishop is a very high-ranking leader in the Catholic Church.
  • Sir (Joseph) David Frederick Mostyn, who was a General in the British Army. A general is a very senior officer in the military.

The family sold their Talacre estate in 1919.
