Mount Aetna is located in the western part of Maryland. It sits at the base of a mountain called South Mountain. The area is between 500 and 700 feet above sea level.

The ground in Mount Aetna is mostly made of a type of rock called Tomstown Dolomite. This kind of rock can dissolve over time, which creates solutional caves. There are at least four known caves in the area. One of them, Mount Aetna Cave, was even open for tours for a short time in the 1930s.
A stream called Mount Aetna Creek flows through the region. It starts in the nearby mountain and eventually flows into Beaver Creek.
