Mt. Baw Baw Alpine Resort is an awesome ski resort in Australia! It's located about 120 kilometers (that's about 75 miles) east of Melbourne, in the state of Victoria. This resort is a special area right next to the Baw Baw National Park. The very top of Mount Baw Baw, which is 1567 meters (about 5141 feet) high, is inside the resort. You can get to the top by using a ski lift or by walking a trail.
Mt. Baw Baw is the closest alpine resort to Melbourne, so it's a popular spot for a quick trip. It only takes about 2.5 hours to drive there! You can reach the resort by the Mount Baw Baw Tourist Road from the west, or by the South Face Road from the east.
In 2018, Mt. Baw Baw became one of the first ski resorts in Australia to use a special machine called a TechnoAlpin Snow Factory. This cool machine can make snow even when it's not super cold outside, which helps keep the slopes ready for skiing!
Skiing and Snowboarding Fun
The resort has 7 different lifts that take you up the mountain to enjoy its 15 ski runs and toboggan (sledding) areas. These lifts include the Maltese Cross T-Bar, Summit T-Bar, Big Hill Poma, Painted Run T-Bar, Tank Hill Platter, Hut Run Platter, and the Magic Carpet.
The ski runs are designed for different skill levels:
- About 25% of the runs are for beginners, perfect if you're just starting out.
- Most of the runs, about 64%, are for intermediate skiers and snowboarders.
- For advanced riders, there are some challenging runs too, making up about 11% of the total.
If you love cross-country skiing, Mt. Baw Baw has over 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) of groomed trails for you to explore!
Mountain Weather
Mount Baw Baw Summit gets a lot of rain and snow every year, more than many other places in mainland Australia. In winter, it snows very often! The mountain is also often covered in low clouds or mist, which can make it feel mysterious.
Summers at Mt. Baw Baw are usually cool. Temperatures rarely go above 25°C (77°F). For example, during a really hot time in 2009 when most of Victoria was over 45°C (113°F), the temperature on Mount Baw Baw's summit only reached a much cooler 31.3°C (88.3°F). It's a great place to escape the heat!
Who Runs the Resort?
The Mt. Baw Baw Alpine Resort is managed by a group called the Southern Alpine Resort Management Board. This same group also helps manage another nearby resort, the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. They work to make sure the resort is a fun and safe place for everyone to visit.
