The Mount Carmel A.M.E. Zion Church & Campground is a special historic place in Heath Springs, South Carolina. It is located in Lancaster County, South Carolina. This site is known for its long history of African Methodist Episcopal Zion "camp meetings." These are like big outdoor church gatherings.

The campground was started way back in 1866. It has about 55 small buildings, often called "cabins" or "tents." These buildings are arranged around the main brick church. The Mount Carmel A.M.E. Zion Church Campmeeting happens every year. It starts on the first Wednesday in September and lasts for four to five days.

What Happens at the Campground?

In the middle of the campground, there is an "arbor." This is an open-air structure, like a big covered outdoor space. Here, people gather for many activities. They enjoy music, gospel singing, and praise and worship. There are also sermons and teachings.

People travel from far away to attend these meetings. Some come from as far as New York City or Orlando, Florida. They come to worship, meet new friends, and share meals. There is also a special area for vendors. These vendors sell different items to visitors.

The Cabins and Church

Most of the cabins are small and made of wood. Some are two stories tall. These larger cabins are built from concrete blocks and wood. They are perfect for bigger families. The church cemetery is also located on the property. It is a quiet place where people remember those who have passed away.
