The closest town to Mount Davies is Pipalyatjara. This is a small community of Aboriginal people. It is located in the APY lands of South Australia. For a time, Pipalyatjara was also known by the name Mount Davies.

History of Mount Davies

Mount Davies is on the traditional lands of the Pitjantjatjara people. They are one of the Anangu groups. The Anangu are Indigenous peoples who live in the central desert region of Australia. They speak the Western Desert language.

First European Sighting

The first European person to see Mount Davies was W.C. Gosse. He was an explorer. Gosse saw the mountain on August 27, 1873. He named it after Richard Davies Hanson. Hanson was an important leader in South Australia at the time. He served as the Acting Governor from December 1872 to June 1873.

Road Construction

Getting to this remote area became easier in the 1950s. This was when the Mount Davies Road was built. The road was made to reach a distant weather station. This station was part of a larger project. It helped with the British nuclear testing program that took place in Australia.
