Mount Elizabeth is a mountain in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. It is found east of Tambo Crossing. This area is part of the beautiful Great Dividing Range.
The mountain is inside the Mount Elizabeth Nature Conservation Reserve. This special reserve is managed by Parks Victoria. It was created in 1984 to protect the natural environment. The reserve covers a large area of about 5,234 hectares (12,934 acres).

Amazing Plants and Animals
The Mount Elizabeth Nature Conservation Reserve is very important for nature. It is the only place in the world where a rare plant called the leafy nematolepis (Nematolepis frondosa) grows. This makes the reserve a vital spot for protecting this endangered species.
Rare Plants of the Reserve
Besides the leafy nematolepis, other special plants live here. Some of these rare or vulnerable plants include:
- Tullach Ard grevillea (Grevillea polychroma)
- Outcrop guinea-flower (Hibbertia hermanniifolia subsp. recondita)
- Mount Elizabeth hovea (Hovea magnibractea)
- Monkey mint-bush (Prostanthera walteri)
- Leafless pink-bells (Tetratheca subaphylla)
Wildlife You Might See
The reserve is also home to interesting animals. If you visit, you might spot some of these native creatures:
- The lace monitor, a large lizard known for its beautiful patterns.
- The yellow-tailed black cockatoo, a striking bird with a loud call.
- The gang-gang cockatoo, another unique cockatoo species.
A Glimpse into History
Mount Elizabeth has a small history connected to timber. In the past, people used to harvest trees from the area.
Sawmills and Timber
The Collins Brothers set up a sawmill near Mount Elizabeth. By 1937, this sawmill was working at its fullest. They cut down trees like messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua) and ash. Before this, another company, the Gippsland Timber Company, also had a sawmill by the river. However, it did not produce much timber.
