Mount Emerson is a tall mountain located in Antarctica. It stands about 2,190 meters (or 7,185 feet) high. This impressive peak is found in the southern part of the DuBridge Range. The DuBridge Range is part of the larger Admiralty Mountains. These mountains are located in Victoria Land, a large area of Antarctica.
Mount Emerson is also about 5 nautical miles (9 kilometers) east-southeast of another peak called Brewer Peak. Its exact location is at coordinates 71°35′ South and 168°44′ East.
Discovering and Naming Mount Emerson
Scientists first mapped Mount Emerson between 1960 and 1963. This mapping was done by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS uses surveys and air photos taken by the United States Navy to create detailed maps.
The mountain was later named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. This committee is in charge of naming places in Antarctica. They named Mount Emerson after George L. Emerson. He was a Steelworker in the U.S. Navy. George L. Emerson worked at McMurdo Station in 1967. McMurdo Station is a research base located on Hut Point Peninsula on Ross Island in Antarctica.
