Mount Hancock is a tall mountain peak located in Yellowstone National Park. It stands at about 10,223 feet (3,116 meters) high. This mountain is found on a long, narrow hill called Big Game Ridge. It is a special, isolated peak in the park.

Naming Mount Hancock

How did Mount Hancock get its name? Captain John W. Barlow named the peak in 1871. He was exploring Yellowstone at the time. Captain Barlow chose the name to honor General Winfield Scott Hancock. General Hancock was an important military leader.

General Winfield Scott Hancock's Role

General Hancock played a key role in Yellowstone's early history. He gave orders for a military escort. This escort protected the Washburn–Langford–Doane Expedition of 1870. This expedition was very important. It helped explore and map the Yellowstone area. The military escort was led by Lieutenant Gustavus Cheyney Doane.

Where is Mount Hancock Located?

Mount Hancock is in the southern part of Yellowstone National Park. It sits on Big Game Ridge. This ridge is steep and runs north to south. It is located just south of Heart Lake. The mountain is also very close to the park's southern border.
