Gilbert Johnson's Military Career

Gilbert Johnson was one of the first African Americans to join the United States Marine Corps. This was a big step forward for equality. He also became one of the first African American drill instructors. A drill instructor trains new recruits in the military. Later, he became one of the first black Sergeants Major. This is a very high rank in the Marine Corps.

Honoring a Hero

Because of his amazing service and leadership, a place was named after him. In 1974, a training base in North Carolina was renamed Camp Gilbert H. Johnson. It was previously called Montford Point. This renaming honored his important contributions to the country.
