Mount Hermon is a small community in Santa Cruz County, California. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is not officially a city or town with its own local government. It is also a census-designated place (CDP). This is a special area the government uses to collect information about people.

History of Mount Hermon

Mount Hermon has an interesting past. In 1841, the very first water-powered sawmill in California was built here. It was located where Bean Creek and Zayante Creek meet. Four men, including Peter Lassen, built it.

From Tuxedo Junction to Mount Hermon

Before 1906, this area was known as "Tuxedo Junction." It was a stop on the South Coast Pacific Railroad. This train line went from Alameda to Santa Cruz. There was a hotel called Hotel Tuxedo here.

On April 14, 1906, a group bought the hotel. This group later became the Mount Hermon Association, Inc. Five women from the group chose a new name for the area. They picked "Mount Hermon" after a mountain in the Holy Land.

A Christian Retreat Center

The land was planned to be a Christian retreat center. A retreat center is a place where people go to relax, learn, and focus on their faith. The dedication day for this center was July 22, 1906. It was called "The Great Day." About 1,400 people came to the event at the Zayante Inn. Dr. Reuben A. Torrey, who was the President of the Moody Bible Institute, spoke at the event.

Sadly, the Zayante Inn and other small buildings burned down on April 18, 1921. Today, the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center is on much of the original land. It has three different facilities. There are also hundreds of private homes, a post office, and a bookstore in Mount Hermon.
