Zayante Creek: A Special Stream

Zayante Creek is an important natural area. It flows through the western slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The land around the creek, called the Zayante Basin, is about 1,000 feet (300 meters) high.

What is a Tributary?

A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. Zayante Creek has two main tributaries:

Why is Zayante Creek Important?

The U.S. government has noted that Zayante Creek has some issues. For example, it has too much sediment, which is like dirt and sand. Its tributary, Lompico Creek, also has problems with tiny germs called pathogens.

To help the creek, a special project took place from 1998 to 2000. This project aimed to make it easier for certain fish to swim upstream, grow, and lay their eggs. These fish are called anadromous fish, meaning they live in the ocean but return to fresh water to reproduce.

How Do We Study the Creek?

Since 1959, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has had a special station on Zayante Creek. This station is called a stream gauging station. It helps scientists measure things like how much water is flowing in the creek. This information helps us understand the creek's health over time.

What is the Land Like Around Zayante Creek?

The ground and rocks along Zayante Creek change as you go higher up. Scientists have identified different types of rock formations, including:

  • Monterey Formation
  • Zayante Formation
  • Vaqueros Sandstone
  • Lompico Sandstone

About halfway along its path, Zayante Creek crosses a natural crack in the Earth's crust called the Zayante Fault.

What Lives in Zayante Creek?

The area around Zayante Creek is home to many interesting plants and animals. It even has a rare type of forest called the maritime coast range ponderosa pine forest. This special forest is important because it is home to two types of tiny creatures (arthropods) that are endangered, meaning they are at risk of disappearing forever.
