Discovering Mount Joyce

Explorers first mapped Mount Joyce a long time ago. This happened during the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907–09. This expedition was also called the Nimrod Expedition.

The mountain was named after a man named Ernest Joyce. He was an important part of the expedition. Ernest Joyce was in charge of many things. These included general supplies, dogs, and sledges. He also helped with collecting animals.

Ernest Joyce was a very experienced explorer. He had been on another trip to Antarctica before. This was the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–04. He also joined Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition later on. This was from 1914–17.

The Rocks of Mount Joyce

Mount Joyce is made of very old rocks. It is like a leftover piece of a flat land area. This area is called a tableland. The rocks are from a time called the Jurassic period. This was about 145 to 200 million years ago.

The main types of rocks found here are:

  • Kirkpatrick lavas: These are rocks formed from ancient volcanoes.
  • Ferrar dolerite sills: These are layers of hard, dark rock. They formed when hot, melted rock pushed into cracks in other rocks.
  • Beacon Supergroup sandstone: These are layers of sand that turned into rock over millions of years.

These different rock layers are stacked on top of each other. They are tilted slightly to the west. On Mount Joyce, you can see three main layers of the hard dolerite rock. Between these layers are thinner sections of the sandstone.
