Matajur is a beautiful mountain that stands tall at 1,642 meters (about 5,387 feet). It's located right on the border between two countries: Slovenia and Italy. This mountain is part of the Julian Alps, a famous mountain range known for its stunning views.
Matajur sits between the green Soča valley in Slovenia and a hilly area in Italy called Venetian Slovenia. From its top, you can even see the sparkling Adriatic Sea far away! The mountain has a "prominence" of 1,385 meters. Prominence means how much a mountain sticks up from the land around it, showing how impressive it looks compared to nearby valleys.
A Famous Moment in History
Matajur was the site of an important event during World War I. This happened on October 26, 1917.
The Battle of Matajur
During this time, a German military commander named Erwin Rommel led a small group of about 100 soldiers. They faced a much larger Italian force, which had over 7,000 soldiers defending the mountain. Even though Rommel's group was much smaller, they managed to capture Matajur. This was a very surprising victory and is still studied in military history today.
