Discovering Mount McDonald
Mount McDonald was officially named by a special group of explorers. This group was the New Zealand Federated Mountain Clubs Antarctic Expedition. They explored the area during the years 1962–63.

The mountain was named to honor a man named William McDonald. He was a brave seaman who sailed on a famous ship. This ship was called the Terra Nova.
William McDonald was part of a very important journey. This journey was the Terra Nova Expedition. It was a British expedition to Antarctica that took place from 1910 to 1913.
McDonald lived in New Zealand. Years after his first Antarctic trip, he returned to the continent. He visited Antarctica again in 1962–63. He was a special guest of the United States Navy. He traveled with two other veterans who had been with Robert Falcon Scott on the original expedition.
