About Mount Murchison

Mount Murchison stands at an impressive height of 2,408 meters (about 7,900 feet) above sea level. This makes it one of the highest mountains in New Zealand, ranking around the 101st tallest! It's a really noticeable peak, standing out from the land around it.

Mountain Features

This mountain is home to some cool natural features. To the east of its peak, there's a dip in the land called a "col." This col separates two different glaciers.

  • The Kahutea Glacier is found to the south.
  • The White Glacier is located to the northeast.

These glaciers are huge, slow-moving rivers of ice that add to the mountain's amazing look.

First Climbers

People have been exploring Mount Murchison for a long time. The first known climbers to reach the very top were C.K. Ward and A.E. Talbot. They successfully made their way to the summit in 1913. The easiest way to climb Mount Murchison is usually from the northwest side, going over the White Glacier. This route offers a challenging but rewarding adventure for experienced climbers.
